Interior Design Trends that Need to Go In 2023

Before, we jump in it is important to note that interior design trends and faux pas are totally arbitrary. Use your intuition to guide you. Pay attention to designs that speak to you & the lifestyle you want to nurture.

This list is meant to push you to embrace what you truly love & reflect on the unsustainable trends that we all piggybacked off of.

Warning Label : This list is not for the frail of heart. We’re in this together. Some of the trends on this list might hurt to see, but I promise we are on to better things!

  1. All White Kitchens

I know, I know, but hear me out. If you already have your beautiful all white kitchen, I’m not telling you that I think a remodel is in your future. But if you are planning to update your kitchen, I would like to introduce you to the beautiful world of truly happy kitchens. The reason why white kitchens are on their way out is because they were a huge trend that started just after the grey trend and we all jumped onto it because it feels “safe” and “timeless.” And it does look heavenly until you’re living in it.

White kitchens make me want to scream “life is too short, have some fun!”

The beauty of home is enjoying it! Claim it! Express yourself! Or collaborate with me to feel like you are truly reflected in your home &, therefore, live inside your happy. Check out some of the expressive kitchen designs I love that makes entertaining & creating food that nourishes you all the happier.

Comment your favorite kitchen!

3. Uncomfortable Seating Trends

None of us are starting our furniture shopping journey saying, “I want that uncomfortable sofa, lounge chair, bar stool, or ottoman”, but somehow we still fall into the arms of so many uncomfy pieces. WHY?! Because we love the AESTHETIC, the trend, the “I am oh so cool” look.

Here [above] is a classic case of the stunning sofa with a devastatingly low back. Believe me, your throw pillows & blankets will be working way too hard to soften the sting of the lack of back support.

I mean, I love this gorgeous chair, but keep it out of your dining chair sets and buy one or a pair of two for a space like a tiny cafe table or for a sweet vignette.

The leather saddle accent chair is that, an accent chair. I’ve seen living rooms with these chairs as pairs within their primary seating area.

In the season of the farmhouse, these wooden counter stools became IT! No back support & let’s admit it these are a fast train to a numb a**.

These pieces have their place, but that does not include within any circumstances include the living room, kitchen, or dining room. Let’s make it a priority to make these spaces where we can lounge and listen to vinyl after vinyl, entertain guests for hours, and have connecting conversations as we gather around the dining table.

3. Interior Plantation Shutters

Any arch enemy of natural lighting is not a friend of mine. Nothing makes you or your home look better than natural light, so let it IN.

Don’t use plantation shutters as window treatments for your interior spaces. They block a significant amount of natural light.

Do use plantation shutters on your outdoor spaces, think three-seasons room, front porch,

You’ll be happy you let the light flood into your beautiful home!

4. Grey Anything & Everything

We all jumped into this trend headfirst in 2016. This trend was the epitome of following the crowd design trends. The ones you don’t even know why you committed to. It’s like the person you’ve only been on two dates with. The one you are so busy trying to convince to fall in love with you that you forget to ask “Wait… do I even like them?”

What I’m saying is, grey isn’t the enemy, blindly following trends is.

My hope is that I can inspire you to tap into the colors, textures, and styles that reflect you and your lifestyle.

Plus, when you can live in a world of color, why would you choose to live in a world of grey.

6. Anything Farmhouse

Especially signage.

Unless you actually live on a farm, please leave this trend in 2016. I’m looking at you Hobby Lobbys in every Midwest town.

Your home should be the lovechild of the architectural style of your home, the interior design style[s] you love, & the pieces you’ve collected through your travels or on a lucky trip to Homegoods.

If the farmhouse style speaks to you, you don’t have to say goodbye to that dream just because you live in Tampa, Florida. Find a picture of a farmhouse interior you swoon over and note the elements that you love about the space. Now, notice their finishes or colors. Pull them & use them as your palette for your home, but using finishes that honor the style of your home.

You may have a friend, sibling, or maybe a parent who has signage all over their home. Farmhouse style or not, please let me be the bad guy, send them this post, and tell them to scroll down to the bottom.

This is going to hurt to hear : the signage isn’t cute, it never was. YOU DON’T LIVE ON A FARM. YOU DON’T SELL “FRESH EGGS, ETC.”

I warned you!

I hope my list of trends that NEED TO GO didn’t hurt too bad. I’ve painted all of my kitchen cabinets grey and I convinced myself to buy an uncomfortable pair of chairs because of the AESTHETIC.

Check back in for future blog posts on how you can tweak your space and give it a complete refresh!
